About us

Quality rooted in passion

Our journey began in 2005, when Alfa Variegata Nurseries was established on De Meye wine farm, initially focusing mostly on growing indigenous trees. My late father, Deon Zwiegelaar, played an invaluable part in those formative years, and in 2008 he made it possible for us to relocate the nursery to our farm near Klapmuts, where we are today. In 2016 the business was rebranded as AVNPlants (Pty) Ltd, and I’ve recently been joined by my wife Amy, my partner in both life and business.

Being fascinated by the genetic diversity we’re blessed with in our part of the world, getting to know its beautiful plants, and hopefully expanding their range while having fun along the way seems like a worthy calling!

“Niemand maak tuin soos die Grootman nie!”

— André Snyman, Vanwyksdorp

We source and collect our own propagation material, and we run nursery trials on plants that have seldom or never been in the trade. Always something new and different!

Our range covers unique Cape bulbs, renosterveld plants, indigenous marginal aquatic (wetland) species, a selection of grasses and succulents, and whatever else needs growing.

“In the year which suffers from frequent storm, melons stretch out their numerous vines and corn spreads its roots on the ground so that they may fight against wind. A man who cannot fight against difficulties and falls down before them should be ashamed before the plants.”

“After the rain the ground hardens.”
Proverb, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“The universe moves on and on, and a stop there is not in the growth of all things around us.”
Ninomiya Sontoku, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“Though it appear but a rotten tree in the depths of the mountain, yet, if its core is not dead, flowers would blossom on its branches.”
Moral Song, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“Even the streams that pour unto the great sea have passed under leaves and mountains for a while.”
Old Song, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“A hot spring remains hot all the year round without attention, but a bath is kept hot only by constant care, and, when the fire is not fed, it soon becomes cold again. Good land is like a hot spring and poor land is like a bath.”
Ninomiya Sontoku, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“A mugwort which grows amidst hemp is straight.”
Proverb, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“Press right on, though thy ways be dark; skies may clear ere thy course is done.”

In the waters is a voice heard:
The winds sweep across the firmament.”

“One who climbs a steep hill seldom falls, however laborious the climbing may be, while the man who runs down a hill, easy though the path, often comes to grief.”
Ekken, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“Heaven moves ceaselessly, while the earth is quiet and motionless. Following Heaven’s way, let us work incessantly, and following that of the earth let our hearts be for ever tranquil.”
Ekken, from A Little Book of Japanese Wisdom
“All the joy of my existence is concentrated around the pillow which gives me nightly rest, all the hope of my days I find in the beauties of Nature that ever please my eyes.”

Plant Hub

Get to know the plants

Our Plant Hub is a growing library of species profiles for plants mainly from the Klapmuts area: names in English and Afrikaans, conservation status, habitat, flowering, propagation and wildlife value, with links to SANBI and iNaturalist. Here are four of them, picked at random each visit.

How to get here

Klein Groenfontein Farm, Eenzaamheid Road, Klapmuts, 7625
From the Klapmuts traffic lights (where the R44 crosses the R101): drive north on the R44 towards Wellington, passing under the N1 highway.
From the N1: take the R44 Klapmuts / Wellington off-ramp and turn north towards Wellington.
  1. Pass the Waterzicht farm entrance, then turn left at the next turn-off, signposted “Protea Pad”.
  2. The tar soon gives way to gravel. Follow the road around the 90° bend to the left and continue down the hill.
  3. At the bottom of the hill, turn right at the “Eenzaamheid Pad” sign.
  4. You’ll see the Briza Kennels gate on your left (our friendly neighbours, well worth a stop if your pets need boarding).
  5. About 50 m further, turn right into the AVNPlants entrance (see photo).
